Undedicated Memorial

In an increasingly post-humanities society, it is recognized that the academy is the only place for such ‘absurd’ research as a rough comparison of a mythical everyman and a historic young death. As a practice itself, drawing is analogous to the humanities education; it is 'impractically' transient – inviting dialogue and even change to the work through its democratic nature. This intentional temporality of the work is an honest reflection of the process, context, and the work's existence as an object. The work remains centered on the pursuits of the artist as a maker of irrational objects enacting a defense for the ‘academic absurd’ by asking questions such as, what is the reasonable academic pursuit? Is the marketable skill the only useful one?

While the cultural context is grounded in Americana, the interdependent relationship of myth and history provides context outside of a specific cultural understanding. With academic standards of research, a conglomeration of pull quotes, comments, and images become the basis for irrationally rational studies, folding history and myth back into each other. While the narratives loose their individual trajectories, something like unified fate or conspiracy begins to unfold.

MONUMENT SERIES
The Monument creates a physical effigy for the personal memory and public history of a life. When left with the remnants of unspecified dedication, questions of legacy and the life lived, especially of one with “excellent taste,” point back as much as they point forward.
